AASH PLC Washing Station
Testi Specialty Coffee bought the AASH PLC washing station in 2019 and started working with local producers to produce specialty coffees at the station.
About 750 small local operators deliver to the station, their farms are located at high altitudes, around or above 1,900 meters above sea level. Grown in Harrar, their coffee takes on the fruity and winey character dear to Harrar coffees and uses a Grade 1 treatment to create a unique and tasty coffee.
Farmers in this region have been growing coffee for generations. They are real specialists. The cultivation methods in the Harrar remain largely traditional. Farmers in the Harrar generally grow their coffee plants with other food crops. This method is common among smallholders, as it maximizes land use and provides food to their families.
In addition to traditional intercalary crops, most farms are also organic by default. Farmers in Harrar generally use very little - if at all - fertilizers or pesticides. Most agricultural work is done manually and very few tasks are mechanized, even during processing.
